Popcorn is a yummy and easy snack for any weekend’s
cinematherapy.

On its own, popcorn is actually incredibly healthy, full of antioxidants, fiber, and only 31 calories per one cup serving. But when it’s doused with butter, salt, pesticide, artificial flavoring and coloring, and chemicals, that leave an after taste (ewww!), you put your health at risk, gain calories and fat, and lose the real flavor of the natural corn. So, here are some easy and simple ways to enjoy your popcorn that won’t compromise your health or leave a mess on your hands or the couch.

Coconut oil: Instead of butter, heat up some coconut oil on the stove top or microwave oven and toss with popcorn while it’s warm. It’s delicious and you’ll be reducing your cholesterol at the same time.

Sea salt: Instead of table salt, use real sea salt and only enough to toss lightly. Sea salt doesn’t contain additives and anti caking agents that can poison your system.

Kettle corn: They are low in calories, but also sweet and salty. You can make your own by using coconut sugar and sea salt.

Spices: Instead of salt, try using various spices such as cayenne, paprika, smoked paprika, cumin, etc.

Nutritional yeast (NY): Want a cheesy taste without the dairy, fat, hormones, and calories? NY tastes cheesy and it’s full of B vitamins, essential amino acids, and tastes naturally salty. I am currently in love with NY. I put it on everything.  You can also add spices along with NY and make it even more unique and tastier.

Chocolate: What? Yap! Chocolate makes a good topping for popcorn. Melt some dark chocolate (70% cocoa at least) in the microwave or in a double broiler and pour over the popcorn.
Dark chocolate is full of antioxidants, controls blood sugar, full of vitamins & minerals, etc.
Oh yeah. Life is always good with chocolate!

Nuts, seeds, and fruits: You can also add your favorite nuts, seeds, and fruit with or without salt.

On its own: Who says you have to have something on your popcorn? I often have my popcorn freshly popped and enjoy it while it’s warm. The sweet corn kernels are tasty on its own and I can eat as much as I want, while empowering my body and health.

You can mix and match these options. And as always, buy organic, natural, and local products and foods as possible.
