May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

It’s Time for a Mental Health Check Up.
Just like getting an annual physical, it’s equally important to get a mental health check up at least once a year because the body and the mind works together. Here are some basic and simple tips to help you get started on developing a healthy mental health for life.

Know Your Family Mental History:
Just like medical illnesses, some mental disorder or conditions can be hereditary, such as depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, etc. Knowing your family’s mental history can help you be proactive to minimize the onset of symptoms and exercise preventive measures. So, talk to your parents, grandparents, aunts, etc., to see if there were any mental illness or psychological or emotional issues in your family.

Talk to Your Doctor
When getting your physical check up, talk to your doctor about mental health evaluations and any symptoms you might have. Tell the doctor about your family mental illness history. If there’s a need, he/she will make recommendations accordingly. Make sure you mention all the emotional and mental symptoms, in addition to physical ones during your doctor’s visits. They are just as important. Also, consider getting second or third opinions.

Eat Healthy & Exercise
I say this a million times, but these two are the foundation and the basics for overall health for both the body and the mind, and it can effect every aspect of your life in a positive way. Eating real foods, reducing meats, processed, and fast foods, and regular exercise can help balance your serotonin level, which will stabilize your moods, as well as increase your endorphins to boost your positive mood and energy.

Do Some Talk Therapy
Whatever mental or emotional issues you may have, talk to someone that you can trust, such as a psychotherapist or a counselor, etc. Keeping things bottled up inside of you could lead to negative and unhealthy behavior, consciously or unconsciously.
Psychotherapy is about self-discovery and it takes enormous courage to look at all that is you; the good, the pain, the heart, and soul, so that you can improve, heal, empower and move on with your life. Don’t you want to know what else is inside of you? There lies untouched treasures. And you already have the courage for a journey into you.

Relax
Find some time in a day to give yourself a break, breathe, meditate (even for 5 minutes), relax, and treat yourself to something special, just for you. You deserve it.
